U.S. equity index futures dropped on Thursday as climbing Treasury yields continued to weigh on risk appetite, sending Nasdaq 100 futures down 1%. Major European bourses traded mixed.

The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield touched 5.446% during intraday trading, reaching its highest level since June 2004.

Meanwhile, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield—a key reference rate for residential mortgages—advanced to 5.15%, hovering near highs not seen since July 2007.

Energy markets rallied in tandem. International benchmark Brent crude futures gained 2% to trade above $105 per barrel.

The bond selloff has fueled aggressive bets on additional Federal Reserve tightening.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the market-implied probability of another interest-rate hike at the October FOMC meeting has surged above 70%, up from roughly 55% just a week ago.

In a strategy note on Thursday, UBS strategists noted that their baseline scenario still assumes energy supply disruptions will remain relatively contained, with the duration and scope of the inflation shock insufficient to derail economic expansion.

Fresh S&P Global purchasing managers' index (PMI) data across manufacturing and services indicated that U.S. business activity continues to expand at a solid clip.

However, BMO Capital Markets cautioned in a note Wednesday that despite resilient activity prints, "severe supply chain bottlenecks" alongside elevated fuel and transport logistics costs threaten to rekindle headline inflation.

"Broadly speaking, U.S. business activity data came in much stronger than anticipated, pointing to considerable upside room for both the policy rate and Treasury yields over the near term," said Vail Hartman, U.S. Rates Strategist at BMO.

"Even if supply-driven price pressures moderate, these robust prints reinforce the tangible risk that demand-pull inflation re-accelerates," Hartman added.
