U.S. equities rose across the board on Thursday, with the S&P 500 closing at a fresh record as benign July producer-price data strengthened the case for a Fed hold. The Nasdaq 100 crossed 30,000 for the first time since June 30 and the VIX touched a year low. Memory shares led technology gains, while a record private-credit default rate and new U.S. drone tariffs remained risk factors.

Global Market Indices Update - 14 August 2026
U.S. equities moved higher across the board on Thursday, August 13, with the S&P 500 closing at a fresh record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.13% to 53,839.99, the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.81% to 26,803.03, and the S&P 500 gained 0.65% to 7,798.99, surpassing its previous closing high set last Friday.

The Nasdaq 100 climbed 1.15% to 30,084.50, its first close above 30,000 since June 30. Risk appetite also showed in volatility markets: the VIX fell intraday to 14.39, its lowest level of the year.

Before the opening bell, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that July producer prices rose 4.7% year over year, below the 4.9% consensus and well down from June’s 5.5% pace. Core PPI, excluding food and energy, increased 4.2%, in line with expectations.

The data further reduced expectations of additional Federal Reserve tightening. CME FedWatch showed a 65.7% probability that policymakers will hold rates steady at their next meeting, up from roughly 60% the prior day. U.S. Bank Asset Management Head of Capital Markets Research Bill Merz said how officials interpret the data and ultimately respond remains an uncertainty markets are still processing.

Merz said that the incremental easing visible in both CPI and PPI is a positive signal for now. CFRA Senior Vice President Arun Sundaram added that the modest PPI reading, together with last week’s softer-than-expected jobs report, should give Fed Chair Kevin Warsh more room to keep policy unchanged.
Key Events
SanDisk Unveils Ambitious Long-Term Growth and Margin Targets
At its 2026 Investor Day, SanDisk set out a new multi-year framework as AI demand shifts from training toward inference. The company expects enterprise data-center flash demand to reach 1.2ZB by 2030 and forecasts mid- to high-teens revenue growth in fiscal 2028–2030, with non-GAAP gross margin near 80% and adjusted free-cash-flow margin around 50%.
U.S. Sets 10%–100% Tariffs on Imported Drones and Components
The White House said President Trump signed a proclamation imposing ad valorem tariffs of 10% to 100% on imported drones and related components on national-security grounds. Highly sensitive drone types, docking stations, and selected critical components will face the 100% rate.
Fitch: U.S. Private-Credit Default Rate Reaches Record High in July
Fitch Ratings reported that the trailing 12-month default rate across the 1,300 U.S. private-credit borrowers it tracks rose to a record 6.1% in July from 6.0% in June. The rate for roughly 300 issuers with Fitch private ratings for insurers eased to 8.6% from 9.4%, highlighting uneven credit stress across the market.

MEMORY & DATA STORAGE
Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM)$56.93▲ 3.89%
SanDisk (SNDK)$1,528.11▲ 13.67%
Key Drivers: Memory stocks accelerated after SanDisk’s investor day outlined mid- to high-teens fiscal 2028–2030 revenue growth, roughly 80% non-GAAP gross margin, and around 50% adjusted free-cash-flow margin. DRAM advanced 3.89% and SanDisk surged 13.67%, as AI inference expanded the call for high-capacity, energy-efficient enterprise flash.
Outlook: Enterprise data-center flash demand could reach 1.2ZB by 2030, underpinning a multi-year memory upcycle. Execution against elevated margin targets and the pace of AI inference adoption remain the key variables.
SHIPPING & LOGISTICS
Baltic Dry Index (Aug 13)2,844▼ 3.23%
Drewry WCI (Aug 13)$4,339▲ 1.00%
Market Dynamics: The Baltic Dry Index fell 3.23% to 2,844 on Aug 13, its fourth consecutive decline and lowest close since Aug 3. Capesize rates dropped 5.2% to 4,469 and Panamax rates fell 1.7% to 2,262. Drewry’s World Container Index rose 1% to $4,339 per 40ft container, as Transpacific pricing climbed amid carrier capacity restrictions.
Outlook: Dry-bulk weakness is likely to persist while capesize demand cools. Container freight remains volatile: blank sailings, Panama Canal surcharges, Suez and Hormuz security risks, Asian port disruptions, and low Rhine water levels are producing sharply diverging trade-lane rates.
