Global Market Indices Update - 19 August 2026
An intraday reversal in South Korean equities triggered a broad selloff across U.S. AI supply-chain names on Tuesday. Escalating Middle East risks and renewed concern over a developed-market bond selloff added pressure to Wall Street’s best-performing groups of the year. The S&P 500 fell 0.69% to 7,691.76, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.33% to 26,289.71, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.22% to 53,343.40.

Long-dated Treasury yields reversed from intraday gains to losses, yet equities found no relief. The day’s sharpest decliners were many of the stocks that had led Monday’s rally, even as breadth improved: 226 S&P 500 constituents rose, up from 133 the prior session.

AI hardware was hit hardest. SK Hynix fell 9.20% and SanDisk lost 9.01%; Coherent dropped 12.75% and Lumentum fell 9.87%. Intel declined 6.58%, Marvell lost 7.82%, and Teradyne fell 8.77% as investors reduced exposure to memory, optical networking, and semiconductor equipment.

Rotation out of technology helped energy and healthcare. Oil-supported energy stocks including Exxon Mobil advanced, while Johnson & Johnson reached another record close and Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Vertex traded near record levels. Coca-Cola also approached an all-time high, while Adobe and Salesforce extended recent rebounds.

Veteran strategist Ed Yardeni said he has not hit the panic button, but is watching whether bond vigilantes begin to act. He still expects U.S. Treasury yields to remain within a normal 4% to 5% range without materially damaging growth or corporate profits; with yields near the upper end of that range, however, scrutiny is rising.

Geopolitical risks offered little comfort. The United Arab Emirates said it detected two Iranian ballistic missiles headed toward the country, with one landing in its waters—the first UAE missile alert since May. Citing a regional escalation that threatens peace and security, the UAE suspended all trade, commercial dealings, and financial transactions with Iran until further notice.

Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Federal Reserve meeting minutes. With Chair Kevin Warsh providing little forward guidance, investors will look for clues on the policy outlook and the bond-market turbulence that has become a central risk for equities.

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV)$169.73▲ 1.60%
iShares U.S. Pharmaceuticals ETF (IHE)$105.31▲ 2.16%
Key Drivers: Capital rotated into healthcare as AI hardware sold off. XLV gained 1.60% and IHE rose 2.16%; strength in Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, and positive Amylyx clinical data reinforced demand for defensive growth.
Outlook: Healthcare can retain leadership while long-end yields and AI valuation risk remain elevated, though drug-pricing policy and trial outcomes remain important stock-specific catalysts.
SHIPPING & LOGISTICS
Baltic Dry Index (Aug 18)2,815▼ 2.19%
Drewry WCI (Aug 13)$4,339▲ 1.00%
Market Dynamics: The Baltic Dry Index fell 2.19% to 2,815 on Aug 18, its lowest since July 31. Capesize dropped 3.1% to 4,452 and Panamax fell 2.3% to 2,155, while Supramax added 0.2% to 1,631. Drewry’s latest WCI reading was $4,339 per 40ft container, up 1.0% on Aug 13, led by higher Transpacific rates.
Outlook: The dry-bulk pullback points to softer heavy-cargo demand, while container rates remain split across routes. Geopolitical rerouting and carrier capacity discipline remain the primary upside risks for freight pricing.
