Global Market Indices Update - 18 June 2026
All three major U.S. indices sold off as money markets fully priced in a Fed rate hike before October, following the FOMC decision and Chair Warsh’s inaugural press conference. Losses accelerated into the close. The S&P 500 fell 1.21% to 7,420.10; the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.34% to 26,021.66; and the DJIA declined 0.98% to 51,492.55. The 2-year Treasury yield surged more than 10 bps to a 14-month high.

The “Warsh era” at the Fed opened in turmoil. While the policy rate was held unchanged, the 19 FOMC members were deeply divided: 9 projected at least one hike this year (6 of them expecting two or more), while 9 projected no hike or a cut. Warsh also announced he would not submit economic projections and questioned the practice of using dot plots to signal policy, while forming five working groups to conduct a comprehensive review of Fed operations.

President Trump, attending the G7 summit in France, commented on the Fed decision: “It’s alright, whatever.” When pressed on the possibility of a rate hike, he added: “It could happen. Hard to believe. It will only drag our country down. It’s very unusual.” Trump also defended the U.S.–Iran MOU, saying he did not want to see an economic catastrophe from a prolonged Middle East conflict, and did not want to be “a Hoover-type president.”

On the geopolitical front, both U.S. and Iranian officials confirmed the MOU was signed remotely. Under the deal, the U.S. will immediately lift its naval blockade, while Iran will facilitate safe passage for commercial vessels through the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman — and vice versa — during the 60-day follow-on negotiation period.
