Global Market Indices Update - 20 August 2026
U.S. equities halted a three-session slide on Wednesday after the Treasury moved to address stress in the government-bond market. Gold, silver, and base metals rallied, while a breakthrough in personalized cancer vaccines pushed pharmaceuticals and biotechnology into the market’s spotlight. The S&P 500 rose 0.21% to 7,707.98, the Nasdaq Composite added 0.16% to 26,331.09, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.22% to 53,463.05.

The Treasury said it would at least double its weekly purchases of long-dated Treasuries through November 4. The announcement drove the 10-year yield down nearly 7 basis points to 4.641% and the 30-year yield nearly 10 basis points lower to 5.189%. Because purchases may be funded by bill issuance, markets interpreted the program as a variant of Operation Twist and a near-term effort to stabilize long-end funding conditions.

Evercore ISI’s Krishna Guha said the intervention could encourage buyers who had hesitated as yields rose and make investors more cautious about building aggressive short positions. He also stressed that the measure is small relative to overall Treasury-market flows and does little to alter the underlying fiscal or economic fundamentals.

The day’s focal point was Moderna, which surged 176.97% after reporting that its personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, combined with Merck’s Keytruda, reduced recurrence or death by 49% in a Phase 3 study of high-risk melanoma. The combination also reduced distant metastasis or related death by 59%.

The results ignited a broad healthcare rally. Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie, and Merck all reached record closes, while BioNTech jumped 21.96% and the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index gained 6.39%. The reaction underscored the market’s appetite for both defensive earnings and credible medical-innovation catalysts.

Dr. Catherine Wu of Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber called the melanoma results a gratifying validation of years of work on personalized cancer vaccines. The next challenge, she said, is demonstrating the approach across more difficult cancers. Moderna has nine ongoing Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies across melanoma, non-small-cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, renal-cell carcinoma, and other settings.

The session showed how technical relief in long-end Treasuries can restore risk appetite, but it also shifted leadership sharply toward precious metals, materials, and healthcare. Investors will watch whether the buyback program durably eases bond volatility and whether the oncology results can sustain the biotech re-rating.
