Global Market Indices Update - 10 October 2026
U.S. stocks rallied on Friday, led by technology shares, with all three major indexes closing higher and posting gains for the week. Investors returned to technology names after the prior session’s OpenAI revenue shock, while shifting attention to next week’s heavy slate of corporate earnings and inflation data.

Technology shares were the main force behind Friday’s rebound, which followed a pronounced selloff in AI-linked stocks during the previous session. The gap between market expectations and the reported scale of OpenAI’s revenue led investors to reassess the AI industry’s growth outlook and whether enormous capital spending can generate commensurate returns.

President Trump said in a social-media post that he had just held a “very successful” call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said they had agreed that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the United States and global markets, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and then 1 million tonnes.

Following the remarks, the three major U.S. indexes rose to their intraday highs. International oil prices nevertheless finished modestly higher, with WTI crude futures closing near $92 a barrel and Brent settling above $104.

U.S. Treasury yields remained elevated. The benchmark 10-year yield climbed to about 5.24% on Friday, below Wednesday’s 24-year high but still underscoring the pressure from high funding costs and inflation risk.

“The market remains in a choppy, back-and-forth environment, and sentiment around Iran continues to reverse,” said Ross Mayfield, an investment strategy analyst at Baird. “Conflicting messages from the White House and the Middle East make it difficult for the market to establish a clear trading direction. That is why this rebound has been relatively modest.”

Previously, Trump said that the United States would not attack Iran before the midterm elections and that Washington was engaged in “productive discussions” with Tehran.

Next week, the U.S. third-quarter earnings season enters its busiest stretch, with Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley all scheduled to report.

According to LSEG, analysts expect aggregate third-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies to grow 30.6% year over year. Energy and technology are expected to be the primary growth engines, with earnings projected to rise 123% and 66.5%, respectively.

Michael Monaghan, portfolio manager at Founder ETFs, remains optimistic about equities through year-end given the prospect of strong corporate growth. However, he warned that the Middle East conflict and its effect on oil prices could still weigh on markets. Although Trump said this week that the U.S. would not attack Iran before next month’s midterm elections, that risk has not disappeared.

“The market has not priced in the impact of a more intense war, more frequent military action, and a further expansion of the conflict,” he added.

Key Takeaway: Friday’s rebound restored confidence in technology stocks after Thursday’s AI-led selloff, but risk appetite remains constrained by elevated yields and the possibility that geopolitical escalation keeps oil prices high. The next tests are corporate earnings and inflation data: strong results may sustain the rally, while softer earnings, inflation surprises, or a broader Middle East conflict could quickly revive volatility.
Key Events
Micron to Expand Share Repurchase Authorization to $35 Billion in December
Micron’s board approved an expansion of its share-repurchase authorization, effective December 9, 2026. Its 10-K states that the maximum discretionary repurchase amount will increase to $35.16 billion. The company previously authorized a $10 billion program, with about $2.2 billion still unused. Micron shares fell 1% on Friday but remain up roughly 260% year to date.
Delta Air Lines Cuts 2026 Earnings Outlook as Fuel Costs Surge
Delta sharply reduced its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to $5.10–$5.60, versus its July range of $6.50–$7.50, as jet-fuel costs increased. Fourth-quarter guidance also trailed analyst expectations, and full-year free-cash-flow guidance was reduced to $2.5 billion from as much as $4 billion. CEO Ed Bastian said booking demand has remained resilient as higher fares pass through roughly $6 billion of additional fuel costs.
U.S. Diesel Prices Rise About 70% Since the U.S.-Iran War Began
U.S. diesel prices have risen about 70% since the conflict began, with the national average reaching $6.28 per gallon on October 8. The administration has urged allies to release emergency oil stocks and allowed road vehicles to use dyed diesel exempt from federal highway tax. Industry participants say these steps do little to resolve tight global refined-product supply, while tax and logistics constraints have limited broad retail adoption.
