Market Analysis
On Friday ET, all three major U.S. indices closed slightly lower as AI-related chip stocks were hammered, while healthcare names like Moderna rallied strongly.
Storage stocks led the selloff: Western Digital fell 13.2%, Seagate dropped 12.24%, SanDisk slid 10.46%, and Micron declined 6.7%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunged 5.3%, highlighting the sharp volatility gripping AI chipmakers — a sector that has been a key driver of Wall Street’s gains in recent years.
David Stubbs, Chief Investment Strategist at AlphaCore Wealth Advisory, said: “It’s too early to call this a major tech correction, but concerns about AI profitability and whether enormous capex will generate sufficient returns are not going away anytime soon.” He warned that if U.S. companies fail to meet the high earnings expectations currently priced in, Wall Street faces meaningful downside risk.
Earlier data showed U.S. May inflation climbed back above 4%, with markets attributing the re-acceleration largely to Iran war-driven energy prices, keeping the door open for further Fed tightening. Although oil prices have pulled back as Middle East tensions ease, Art Hogan, Chief Market Strategist at B. Riley Wealth, warned that Apple’s price hikes signal inflation pressures remain.
Minneapolis Fed President Kashkari said Friday he has revised his policy outlook and now expects one rate hike this year. “In March I expected one cut by year-end; by June I shifted to expecting one hike — though this remains preliminary and data-dependent,” he noted. Reports also emerged that OpenAI is considering delaying its IPO to next year, further dampening risk appetite for AI-related names.
