U.S. stock index futures moved sharply lower in premarket trading on Friday (July 17) as intensifying concerns over artificial intelligence spending continued to weigh on global financial markets.

As of press time, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slid 0.64%, S&P 500 futures fell 0.94%, and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 1.94%。

Chip stocks extended their broad decline. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell nearly 4%, while the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) shed over 3.5%.

In individual movers, Tesla and Alphabet both dropped over 2%. Micron Technology, SanDisk, and AMD slid around 3%. Intel, SpaceX, Dell Technologies, and Corning each slumped over 4%, while Netflix tumbled more than 11%.

The ongoing selloff has resonated globally. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index closed down 4.03%. European equities also traded lower, though their declines were more muted due to the region's lower structural exposure to the technology sector.

"Investors are increasingly questioning the sustainability of the current AI capital expenditure boom," BBH strategists noted. "The Bank for International Settlements warned in its latest annual economic report that investment booms driven by disruptive technologies have historically been characterized by cyclical boom-bust patterns."

Barclays strategists, however, downplayed the tech-led volatility. "While technology stocks may remain volatile in the near term, we believe this positioning reset will ultimately prove healthy for the market.

It should create a more attractive entry point for investors focused on the long-term structural opportunities of AI."

Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran took center stage on Friday. Shortly before press time, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement claiming its Aerospace Force had launched a strike on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

Following the escalation in the Middle East, both major international crude benchmarks surged over 2% on the day, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures reclaiming the $80-per-barrel mark.
