OpenAI’s Press Account Hack Marks 4th Security Breach in 15 Months
Big news in the tech world! OpenAI's official press account on X got hacked again, this time promoting a fake cryptocurrency token called "$OPENAI." This incident marks the fourth security breach related to OpenAI on the platform since June 2023. Just recently, OpenAI researcher Jason Wei’s X account was hacked on September 22, along with incidents involving Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki and CTO Mira Murati in June 2024 and June 2023, respectively.
All four hacks promoted a similar OPENAI token, with hackers posting links that led users to phishing sites, asking them to connect their wallets to claim these bogus tokens. Pretty scary, right?
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also making headlines for its fundraising efforts. They’re reportedly in talks to raise $6.5 billion, which could boost their valuation to about $150 billion! If they pull it off, they’ll become only the second startup in the U.S. to hit the $100 billion mark, after SpaceX. Talk about shaking up Silicon Valley!
Given the recent hacking incidents, it’s no wonder some users joked, “This is what a $150 billion company looks like, haha!”
Another pointed out, “Once is unfortunate. Twice is problematic. Thrice is systemic. Four times is...” Well, you get the idea.
Prominent AI researcher Tanishq Mathew Abraham suggested that OpenAI should implement stronger security measures, like two-factor authentication. However, some users under his post commented, “This seems more like a Twitter issue rather than OpenAI’s fault.”
In my opinion, while these security lapses are alarming, they serve as a wake-up call for all tech companies about the importance of cybersecurity. OpenAI is at the cutting edge of AI, so they need to reflect that in their security practices.
