Q2 2024 AIB GPU Market: NVIDIA Commands 88% Share, AMD in Pursuit, Intel Stagnates
In Q2 2024, the global add-in board (AIB) GPU market saw a significant boost, with total shipments reaching 9.5 million units, marking a 9.4% increase quarter-over-quarter and a substantial 47.9% rise year-over-year, according to a recent blog post by Jon Peddie Research (JPR) on September 24th.

Recently, NVIDIA continues to dominate the AIB market with an overwhelming 88% market share, reflecting a 9.7% increase in shipments compared to the previous quarter and an impressive 61.9% year-over-year growth. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has completed his pre-arranged stock sale plan, cashing out over $700 million after nearly three months of selling, according to regulatory filings. The plan, approved in mid-March, allowed Huang to sell up to 6 million NVIDIA shares by the end of Q1 2025 under a 10b5-1 trading arrangement, which permits insiders to trade company stock in a pre-scheduled manner.
During June 13 to September 12, Huang sold 120,000 shares across 50 trading days, reaching his 6 million share limit several months ahead of schedule. The news appeared to boost NVIDIA's stock, which closed up 3.97% on Tuesday in New York. Despite this, NVIDIA's stock had experienced significant volatility over the past three months, driven in part by doubts about the future demand for its chips and Huang's continuous share sales.

Following the completion of the sale, Huang now directly holds 75.4 million NVIDIA shares and an additional 786 million shares through various trusts and partnerships. He remains the largest individual shareholder in the company, as noted in NVIDIA's latest proxy statement.
In Q2 2024, AMD also experienced a 9% increase in AIB GPU shipments compared to the previous quarter, alongside a 3% year-over-year growth. This steady performance highlights AMD's ongoing efforts to maintain its foothold in the competitive GPU market, as it continues to pursue growth amid strong competition.
However, Intel, despite its entry into the AIB market with the Arc A770 and A750 in Q3 2022, has yet to make significant strides, with its shipment volume remaining flat compared to last year. Overall, the AIB market's quarterly growth exceeded the 10-year average, marking a robust period for the industry.
Recently, Intel has launched its new Xeon 6 processor and Gaudi 3 AI accelerator, aiming to strengthen its position in the AI and high-performance computing (HPC) sectors, potentially challenging NVIDIA's dominance. The Xeon 6 features performance cores that double AI vision processing power, while the Gaudi 3 accelerator, designed for large-scale generative AI, significantly boosts deep neural network computations. Intel hopes these new products will provide more efficient AI solutions and meet the growing demands in data centers.
