Should You Upgrade for AI? Apple's iPhone 16 Might Not Be Worth It Yet

The buzz around AI in smartphones might be a bit premature. Some supply chain experts are even saying that the hardware in today's phones isn't ready for true AI integration until 2026 or 2027. And let's be real, are people really going to upgrade their phones just for AI? Seems like most consumers aren't, which is why Apple had to dial back production targets.

At the same time, Jefferies downgraded Apple's stock rating from "Buy" to "Hold," saying people are overestimating what AI can bring to the iPhone 16/17. The analysts think the smartphone market needs a full redesign before AI becomes a real game changer. This is probably why iPhone 16 sales are lagging, especially since Apple's big AI Intelligence features won't be available in China or Europe this year.

So, what's my take? Honestly, I get it. AI is cool, but until we see a massive leap in what phones can do with it, I don't think many people are going to rush out and buy a new one just for that. Remember when 5G came out? Everyone thought it would be a game changer overnight, but it took a few years before most people saw real benefits. I think the same thing is happening with AI now.

What's funny is, while Apple is pulling back, NVIDIA is absolutely crushing it. They're riding the AI wave with their new Blackwell chips and even planning to announce the RTX 50 series at CES 2024. It feels like AI is finding its sweet spot in computing and servers for now, not so much in phones yet.
