Alibaba to Sell Sun Art: Who's the Buyer?

Hey everyone, there's been some buzz in the retail world lately – Alibaba is reportedly selling its controlling stake in Sun Art (6808.HK), the parent company of RT-Mart. Several potential buyers are being rumored, including Hillhouse Investment, Ruentex, and KKR. This comes after Sun Art struggled with revenue declines and market share erosion, despite Alibaba's efforts to integrate it with digital platforms. As the news broke, Sun Art's stock jumped, but Alibaba hasn't settled on a buyer just yet.

Back in 2017, Alibaba invested $2.86 billion in Sun Art, which operates RT-Mart, one of China's largest supermarket chains. By 2020, they doubled down, spending another $3.6 billion to increase their stake to over 70%. The aim was to fuse offline and online shopping through Alibaba's “New Retail” strategy. But even with these investments, RT-Mart couldn't keep up with the rise of e-commerce, livestream shopping, and rapid delivery trends in China.
Sun Art's struggles have been persistent, with its revenues declining over the years and even recording significant losses in both 2022 and 2024. Earlier this year, Alibaba's Joe Tsai mentioned that their traditional retail businesses aren't core to the company anymore, signaling a shift in strategy and possibly setting the stage for this sale.
So, what went wrong? Well, the retail environment in China has evolved faster than expected. Physical retail spaces like RT-Mart are losing their relevance in a world dominated by platforms such as Douyin (Chinese version TikTok) and Meituan. Sun Art's difficulties show how hard it can be for traditional retailers to keep up when consumers now want instant shopping experiences delivered through their phones.
Hillhouse Investment is the frontrunner among the rumored buyers. It's interesting because Hillhouse's founder once had a personal stake in Sun Art before Alibaba came into the picture. Given their experience in restructuring businesses, they seem like the perfect candidate to take over. But let's be real – it's going to be an uphill battle to turn things around for RT-Mart.
In my opinion, this is more than just a corporate sale; it's a sign of the times. Old-school supermarkets like RT-Mart have struggled to keep up in an era of digital-first commerce. Even if Hillhouse takes the reins, it's hard to see how they can compete with the rapid growth of new retail models like livestream shopping and quick commerce.
What do you guys think? Is this the end of traditional supermarkets in China, or can someone still pull off a turnaround? #Alibaba
