From October 21 to 24, the Sibos 2024 Annual Conference, often dubbed the "Olympics of the financial world," is taking place in Beijing, marking the first time in its 44-year history that the event is hosted in a mainland Chinese city.

The conference has gathered over 10,000 attendees from 150+ countries and regions, including central bank representatives, financial regulators, executives from various financial institutions, and their partners. In this high-profile meeting of financial giants, Alibaba International Station has stood out as the only invited cross-border e-commerce platform, drawing significant attention due to its "unique" role.

Zhang Kuo, President of Alibaba International Station, attended the conference. "Global trade should be as simple as online shopping," Zhang remarked. As China’s largest B2B overseas platform, Alibaba International Station has aimed to make cross-border trade as seamless as domestic online shopping through digital innovation, with digitalized cross-border transaction and payment services being one of the pathways.

Much like Alipay once accelerated the transaction process on Taobao, Alibaba International Station offers a similar B2B escrow service for cross-border transactions, significantly reducing the "trust cost." Whether it's a $10 transaction or a million-dollar deal, each one on the platform is backed by credit assurance, with over 20 million secured transactions expected this year, surpassing the total number of global letters of credit.

Zhang also shared a story of an Ethiopian coffee bean seller who, invited by the International Trade Centre (ITC), was scheduled to take the stage at the WTO during this year's UN “Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day.” However, she had to attend virtually due to visa issues. “Not every aspiring entrepreneur can afford or easily travel abroad to meet clients. Technology empowers trade equality, enabling small and micro enterprises to achieve their dreams of global outreach and sales,” Zhang noted. Currently, Alibaba International Station connects 50 million SMEs worldwide.

The ongoing digital innovations at Alibaba International Station allow any small and micro enterprise to "buy globally, sell globally." This year, the platform has been active in the cross-border payment sector, partnering with global payment giant Mastercard to launch the first co-branded business credit card for B2B e-commerce platforms in the U.S. market. It also established partnerships with the major "Buy Now, Pay Later" providers in Europe and the U.S. (Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal) and implemented localized payment strategies across emerging markets in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Collaborating with local wallets and banks, the platform enables buyers to make payments conveniently in their local currencies.

In terms of buyer-seller protection services, Alibaba International Station has introduced several innovative financial measures. To address the issue of returns in cross-border transactions, the platform offers free local return services in addition to guaranteed compensation for lost or damaged packages. For example, U.S. buyers can now return goods to 4,500 local return points. For equipment and customized products, Alibaba provides up to one-year official local warranty and production quality compensation. On the seller side, the platform has launched chargeback protection, offering professional dispute resolution and coverage of up to $12,000 per quarter.

Zhang noted that over the past 20 years, SMEs have become the driving force behind global trade, contributing more than half of global trade volume. AI will further accelerate this trend. Currently, Alibaba International Station has introduced AI applications on both the buyer and seller sides, with its AI business assistant for domestic sellers having over 45,000 users. “AI must be deeply integrated into the core of the production process to truly unleash its potential. Global trade, with its complex challenges, is the perfect testing ground for AI in foreign trade,” Zhang emphasized.

Tao Tian Group, the Chinese commerce arm of Alibaba Group (09988), announced that the first round of sales for Taobao and Tmall began at 8 PM on October 21. Since the launch of the Double 11 sales event, 174 brands have achieved sales exceeding 100 million RMB. In the first four hours, sales for over 12,000 brands doubled compared to the same period last year.

This information could potentially boost Alibaba’s stock, which is currently at 100.91. The resistance level is around 120, and if the news indeed proves to be favorable, the stock could reach around 130, with the next resistance level at approximately 177.
