NVIDIA CEO: Blackwell Chip Design Flaw Has been Fixed, Expecting to be Shipped in Q4

On Wednesday, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said that a design flaw in NVIDIA 's latest Blackwell AI chip which had previously affected production has been fixed with the help of TSMC. He noted that they had a functional design flaw in Blackwell that resulted in very low yield. It was 100% NVIDIA 's fault.”

At a recent Goldman Sachs conference, he revealed that the chips would be shipped in the fourth quarter.

Two major chip giants, Qualcomm and Arm, in the US market, opened down and moved down. Qualcomm reached the maximum decline of 5.13%, closing down 3.8%. Arm reached the maximum decline of 7.79%, closing down 6.67%.

According to foreign media reports, Arm has issued a mandatory notice to long-term partner Qualcomm to cancel Qualcomm's architecture license agreement 60 days in advance. If they fail to reach a reconciliation after the expiration, Qualcomm may not be able to use Arm's instruction set for chip design.

Regarding this news, Qualcomm responded that it is Arm's usual practice: more baseless threats designed to oppress its long-term partner, interfere with their leading-performed CPU products, and raise license rates by disregarding the extensive rights the architecture license agreement between the two parties already covered. Its response expressed that Qualcomm was confident that the rights covered by Qualcomm's agreement with Arm would be affirmed by the courts and that Arm's anticompetitive behavior would not be tolerated.” But, the Arm said that it would not comment on Qualcomm.

Previously, Qualcomm has been considering abandoning the use of the original Arm design in favor of its own original design. On September 2023 Qualcomm, Google, Intel, Nvidia, Samsung, and other companies jointly established a RISC-V software ecosystem program. Last October they released the RISC-V Android SoC chip for the mass market for the first time.

At an event in Hawaii on Monday this week, Qualcomm said that the latest version of the Snapdragon would include its Oryon processor design from its R&D department. Qualcomm noted that the chip would be 45% faster and use less energy than its predecessor.

As of the close of the US market, Nvidia closed down nearly 3%.
