Philips Faces China Challenges but Eyes Global Growth: Can the Stock Rebound from Legal Headwinds?
Royal Philips (PHG.US) reported profit growth in the third quarter but significantly lowered its full-year sales growth forecast due to weak demand in the Chinese market. The company now expects comparable sales growth of only 0.5% to 1.5% in 2024, well below the previous estimate of 3% to 5%.
Third-quarter order intake fell by 2%, and comparable sales remained flat at €4.4 billion, missing analysts' expectations. Although the adjusted EBITA margin reached 11.8%, meeting the upper end of expectations, uncertainties in the Chinese market are expected to persist over the coming quarters. Additionally, Philips continues to face U.S. claims related to sleep apnea device failures, as well as an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. The potential impact of these legal proceedings is not included in the company’s outlook.

The earnings report showed that Philips’ product lines, ranging from toothbrushes to medical imaging systems, had comparable sales that were flat compared to the same period last year, amounting to $4.75 billion, falling short of analysts' average forecast of 2.1% growth.
Nonetheless, adjusted EBITA rose to €516 million, up 13% year-over-year, with the margin improving to 11.8%, driven by cost reductions. CEO Roy Jakobs noted that, despite uncertainties in the Chinese market, the economies in other regions are growing steadily.
Looking ahead, while Philips’ stock has rebounded approximately 45% this year, it remains down over 30% since the June 2021 recall event. Increased stakes from two major investors, Exor NV and Artisan Partners GP LLC, have provided some market confidence, while the recent appointment of Charlotte Hanneman as the company's first female CFO in its 133-year history could also drive improvements in financial management.
Overall, Philips' future stock performance is likely to depend on its performance in global markets and the resolution of its legal challenges. If the company can address uncertainties in the Chinese market and mitigate legal risks, its stock may have room for recovery, with the next resistance level around $33. Otherwise, the stock could face pressure in the short term, with strong support at approximately $11.75.
