NIO Will Launch Its First Hybrid Model Overseas

According to Reuters' report, sources familiar with the matter said that NIO planned to launch its first hybrid model in 2026 but only sell the model in overseas markets including the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. The launch is seen as a way to address the challenge: Chinese electric car companies had limited sales in overseas markets.

 

 

NIO mainly produces pure electric vehicles. The launch of the hybrid model is to accommodate demand in foreign markets. There are two reasons for NIO to develop this type of vehicle. The first is that the infrastructure in the Middle East is not yet ready for the mass adoption of electric vehicles, so this move can boost sales in the Middle East market. The second is that the European Union has imposed additional tariffs on electric cars imported from China, but hybrids are among the exemptions. So, by launching a hybrid model, NIO can avoid the increased tariffs.

 

According to people familiar with the matter, NIO adopted a third brand, Firefly, to develop a programmable hybrid vehicle at the suggestion of CYVN Holdings. NIO planned to launch the hybrid by the end of 2026 with deliveries expected to start in 2027 but not to sell it in China, one of the people familiar with the matter said.

 

 

In China, NIO would continue to sell pure electric models with replaceable batteries. The first Firefly-branded model will be unveiled at the annual event on December 21, to enter the European market and meet the demand of European consumers for small cars with nimble handling.

 

Faced with inquiries about plans for a hybrid model, NIO officials chose to remain silent, saying only that the Firefly brand will stick to pure electric technology, but did not provide further details.
