Shopify Soars 21% After Strong Q3 Earnings – Is It Time to Buy?
Shopify saw its stock surge by as much as 25% today, jumping from an opening price of $88 to a new high of $112 per share, following the release of its impressive third-quarter results.
As a leading e-commerce platform, Shopify provides merchants of all sizes with the tools to sell anywhere, at any time. The company’s Q3 performance was outstanding, with Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) reaching $69.7 billion, revenue of $2.162 billion, and Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) of $175 million, all surpassing consensus expectations. The company also posted a gross profit of $1.11 billion and operating income of $283 million.

For context, GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) refers to the total sales volume on the Shopify platform, including shipping, fees, and taxes. A higher GMV indicates more activity and increased usage of the platform. MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue) represents the predictable, recurring revenue Shopify generates each month through its subscription services, providing a solid growth trajectory for the company. Both GMV and MRR are key metrics that demonstrate the scalability and financial predictability of Shopify's business.
Shopify President Harley Finkelstein remarked, “As we approach the busiest shopping season of the year, our merchants trust Shopify for the tools, speed, and reliability to drive their success.”
Following the strong Q3 results, Shopify's outlook for Q4 is viewed favorably by analysts at Jeffries, who maintain a Hold rating on the stock. Jeffries believes that Shopify is well-positioned to scale its business effectively and profitably. They expect revenue growth of over 20% year-over-year in Q4, with gross profit growth in line with Q3 2024. The company’s free cash flow margin is expected to remain similar to Q4 2023.
Currently, following the strong earnings report, Shopify’s stock has surged 21.04%. The stock price is now approaching its next resistance level at the previous high of $176.29. With no significant resistance in sight at the current levels, the question remains: is it time to buy Shopify?
