The Movie Mania is Back: Record Thanksgiving Box Office and AMC’s Stock Surge!

 

Hey everyone, looks like the movie theater industry is finally back in full swing, and this Thanksgiving weekend proves it! The U.S. box office reached a record-breaking $420 million over the five-day holiday period, surpassing the previous record of $315.6 million set back in 2018. It was a movie marathon that had everyone heading to the theaters.

 

 

So, what made this weekend so special? The big three films leading the charge were Disney’s Moana 2, Universal’s Wicked, and Paramount’s Gladiator II. Moana 2 absolutely crushed it, earning $221 million, making it the highest-grossing five-day opening ever! Meanwhile, Wicked has grossed $262.4 million domestically according to Comscore (after earning another $80 million from Friday through Sunday), and Gladiator II has accumulated $111.2 million domestically (with $30.7 million earned during the same period). These three films had the perfect mix of action, fantasy, and animation, which kept audiences coming back for more.

 

 

Even more interesting? AMC's stock surged about 10% last week, likely thanks to this box office boom. CEO Adam Aron called it a “national phenomenon,” and I have to agree. The way these films drew crowds shows that, despite all the streaming options out there, movie theaters can still deliver an unbeatable experience when they get the right content.

 

 

So, are we witnessing the resurgence of the traditional theater experience in a world where streaming seemed to dominate? As much as I love binge-watching from the couch, there’s something about seeing a massive blockbuster on the big screen that just hits differently.

 

Analysts are saying this could be the blueprint for future holiday weekends. If studios keep delivering high-quality blockbusters and catering to different types of audiences (epic action, musical fantasy, animated adventures), we might see more of these record-breaking weekends. And with Kraven the Hunter and Sonic 3 coming up in December, the momentum could keep rolling.
