Black Boxes from South Korea's Crashed Boeing Aircraft Found For investigation, Boeing to Participate

 

On Monday (Dec. 30), the Jeju Air website claimed that 141 victims in the Dec. 29 Jeju Air crash were identified. A briefing on the details of the crash was also held on Monday.

 

On Dec. 29, a South Korean Jeju Air passenger plane ran off the runway while landing at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do, South Korea, at about 9 a.m. South Korean time (8 a.m. Singapore time) caught fire after colliding with airport facilities. The accident occurred on Jeju Air flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, Thailand, to Muan, South Korea, with 181 people on board, including 175 passengers and six crew members.

 

Of the 181, 2 were rescued and 179 died in the accident, the Korea Fire Service said. This is the worst air crash with the most casualties in South Korea.

 

The latest bulletin shows that the bodies of the 179 victims have been placed to rest in a temporary morgue. The identities of 141 of the victims have been confirmed. Insurance-related procedures have been initiated for the subsequent payment of compensation.

 

According to the latest report, Muan Airport has closed its runway, canceled 10 international flights and 5 domestic flights, and started refund and itinerary change procedures.

 

At the accident briefing held by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), a spokesperson for the MLIT said that the two found black boxes, including the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, have been transferred to the Testing and Analysis Center (TAC) for examination. Multiple parties, including Boeing $BA, will conduct a joint investigation.

 

The spokesperson said that the landing point was estimated to be around 1,200 meters away from the start of the runway. The runway is reportedly about 2,800 meters long, meaning the plane had slid about 1,600 meters in a fuselage-landing condition before finally hitting the airport fence and other facilities and catching fire.
