RedNote Gains Massive Overseas Users Before TikTok Is Banned But Still Unsure If It Can Retain Them

 

Massive US users joined the Chinese social media app RedNote, causing the app to soar to the top of the US apps download ranking this week, sources said on Wednesday (January 15).

 

A source revealed that RedNote gained over 700,000 new users in two days. This week, RedNote's downloads in the US market grew more than 200% year-over-year, up 194% from the previous week, according to estimates from the market research company Sensor Tower.

 

The user boom seems to have made RedNote's company nervous. According to sources, the company has tried to develop English content management tools and build a Chinese-English translation system to serve numerous international users.

 

In brief, the company wants to extend overseas user additions as it offers a potential opportunity for RedNote to expand its user base and popularity.

 

 

TikTok has about 170 million users in the US, half of the nation's population. Currently, ByteDance faces the threat of a ban. Unless it sells TikTok on Jan. 19, it will be banned in the US. The user flow from TikTok to RedNote is happening for multiple reasons.

 

RedNote allows users to post photos, videos, and text content about their lives. It has become a useful search engine for over 300 million users. These features make it qualified to replace TikTok.

 

Additionally, RedNote has a US user base. According to the Pew Research Center's data chart, in 2021 and 2023, RedNote's American users grew rapidly.

 

From Americans’ perspective, the entry into RedNote is a revolt against the US government's ban on TikTok.

 

However, whether RedNote can retain overseas users remains a question, as some users have suspected that RedNote cannot equal TikTok.

 

Brian Atabansi, a US business analyst, explained that TikTok could attract countless users because users could naturally build their community on it. Therefore, users are skeptical about whether they can rebuild their community on RedNote.

 

Meanwhile, TikTok informed its employees on Tuesday (January 14th) that the company has multiple preparations for the possibility of the Supreme Court sustaining the ban.
