Microsoft $MSFT said on Thursday (Jan. 17) that it was integrating Copilot, an AI-fueled tool, into its Microsoft 365 subscription plans for individual consumers and would raise prices for its 365 Family and Personal plans.
The Windows maker will let customers choose whether to subscribe to the plans with Copilot or without it. Copilot will help subscribers use apps in the Microsoft 365 package such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, and Designer. However, Copilot AI usage will be limited by the user's monthly credits. Additionally, users can choose whether to enable or disable Copilot. Users' input will not be for model training.
Microsoft will also increase the price of subscription plans in the US by $3. Previously, Microsoft charged an additional $20 per month for customers using Copilot.
Microsoft's strategic change occurs when observers are suspicious about Copilot's utilization. Last year, a Gartner report questioned Copilot's adoption, prompting Microsoft to enhance its usage. The company has been demanded to prove that its increased AI investment expenses will bring back returns.
Similarly, Google $GOOGL has eliminated a $20 monthly surcharge for using AI features in its Workspace product.
