According to recent reports, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is planning to invest over $12 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in 2025. The ambitious plan includes doubling its spending on AI chips to 40 billion yuan ($5.5 billion) compared to last year and investing $6.8 billion in overseas projects to enhance its foundation model training with advanced Nvidia chips.
However, ByteDance has disputed these claims. A company spokesperson stated, "The reports about our AI infrastructure plans are not accurate. While we prioritize AI development, the figures and specifics being circulated do not align with our actual strategy."
According to industry insiders, around 60% of ByteDance's domestic chip purchases are expected to go to Chinese suppliers such as Huawei and Cambricon, while the remainder will likely be allocated for Nvidia chips tailored to comply with U.S. export regulations. Furthermore, Beijing is reportedly encouraging domestic tech companies to source at least 30% of their semiconductors from local manufacturers, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s semiconductor industry.
The reported investment plans come as ByteDance faces ongoing challenges in the U.S., where scrutiny over TikTok’s operations remains high. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump recently postponed the implementation of a proposed TikTok ban that had been set to take effect on January 19, giving the company temporary relief amid regulatory uncertainties.
At the time of publication, ByteDance, Huawei, Cambricon, and Nvidia declined to comment on the matter.
