Trump Announces Plan to Halt Minting of Pennies to Cut Government Costs

U.S. President Donald Trump revealed plans to end the minting of pennies, labeling the process as wasteful and aligning with his broader initiative to cut government spending. This move is part of a larger strategy by his administration to reduce fiscal inefficiencies.                                            

 

Trump highlighted that it costs more than two cents to produce each penny, with the 2024 production cost pegged at approximately 3.7 cents. For the past 19 years, the cost of minting pennies has consistently exceeded their face value, although the exact total cost of producing them remains unspecified.

 

Trump’s focus on reducing spending led to the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, to eliminate waste in federal operations. However, the initiative has drawn criticism, especially after efforts to cut USAID funding and reports that Trump is considering dissolving the Department of Education.

 

Defense spending remains a major hurdle for significant cuts. Musk recently scaled back his ambitious goal to trim $2 trillion from the federal budget in two years, saying a $1 trillion reduction would be more realistic.
