China Unveils Action Plan for Senior Tourism Trains, Aiming for Significant Growth by 2027

 

According to a report on the Ministry of Commerce's website on February 11, China’s Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China State Railway Group, and seven other agencies have jointly released the "Action Plan for Expanding Senior Tourism Trains to Promote Service Consumption." The plan aims to establish a comprehensive nationwide senior tourism train system by 2027, with diverse routes, rich themes, and significant growth in the number of trains and passenger volumes.

 

The policy encourages various investments, including from private enterprises and international brands, to participate in the development and operation of senior tourism trains. It also includes a financial support framework for the retrofitting of trains, focusing on making them more senior-friendly, eco-friendly, and comfortable. Financial institutions will be encouraged to provide funding for the technical upgrades of the trains. New railway stations will also adhere to barrier-free facility standards to accommodate elderly travelers.

 

In terms of service enhancements, the policy mandates the inclusion of medical and elderly care personnel onboard the trains, as well as a range of services such as special meals, health therapies, cultural performances, and more, to enrich the travel experience for senior passengers. Additionally, tourist attractions will implement ticket discounts for senior visitors, while insurance companies are encouraged to offer specialized insurance products for the elderly tourism market.

 

As China’s aging population continues to grow, the introduction of senior tourism trains aims to meet the increasing travel demands of the elderly. The policy’s implementation is expected to rapidly expand the senior tourism market, providing seniors with safer and more comfortable travel options, while also driving development in related industries.
