WeChat Integrates DeepSeek R1, Tencent’s Strategic Move in AI

Yesterday, WeChat officially began gray-scale testing with the DeepSeek R1 model. Users can now find an “AI Search” option in the chat interface, allowing them to choose between “Quick Q&A” and “In-depth Thinking.” #tencent has stated that the integration of DeepSeek R1 will enhance WeChat’s AI search capabilities, following the previous incorporation of its Hongyuan model. However, this move does not involve an official partnership with DeepSeek.

This development marks Tencent’s active push into the AI field, with multiple Tencent products, including Tencent Cloud AI Code Assistant and Tencent Yuanbao App, also adopting DeepSeek R1. This rapid implementation reflects Tencent’s strategy of focusing on real-world applications and the flexible use of AI technology.

 

WeChat, with over 1.3 billion monthly active users, has integrated the DeepSeek R1 model, enhancing its AI capabilities and potentially transforming its commercial strategy. This move is seen as part of Tencent’s broader, multifaceted approach.

First, DeepSeek R1 complements Tencent's Hunyuan model by excelling in long-text reasoning and complex logical inference, enabling WeChat to deliver more structured answers using data from official accounts and video channels.
