Asian Markets Mixed on Monday with China Leading the Gains and Japan Showing Modest Growth

Asian markets showed mixed performance on Monday, February 17, with China’s A-shares and technology stocks in Japan showing strength. Hong Kong saw a slight decline, while South Korea posted solid gains. Trading volumes in China surged, and sectors such as general equipment, consumer electronics, and semiconductors attracted significant investor interest.
China’s A-shares ended higher, with the Shanghai Composite Index up 0.27%, closing at 3,355.83 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index gaining 0.39%, finishing at 10,791.06 points. The ChiNext Index rose 0.51%, closing at 2,226.62 points. Market activity was notably stronger, with trading volume surging by 226.47 billion CNY, reaching a total turnover of 19,414.74 billion CNY. Technology and industrial sectors, particularly general equipment, consumer electronics, and semiconductors, were popular among investors.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index closed slightly lower, down 0.02% to 21,320.11 points, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 0.49%. However, Tencent Holdings bucked the trend, rising nearly 4%, contributing to tech sector strength despite broader market weakness.
The Nikkei 225 rose modestly by 0.06%, closing at 38,894.39 points, and the TOPIX Index gained 0.28%, finishing at 2,777.83 points. Kawasaki Heavy Industries rose over 5%, while Sony climbed more than 4%. Disco and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries also posted solid gains, while Fuji Electric and Advantest gained more than 1%.
Other Asian Markets,South Korea’s KOSPI rose 0.75%, closing at 2,610.42 points, as most of its constituent stocks saw positive movements. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI fell 0.51%, reaching 1,583.52 points, and India’s S&P BSE Sensex showed slightly lower, down 0.07% at 75,888.63 points as of 16:18 SGT.
