Asian Markets Mixed on Wednesday, February 19, with China’s A-shares and Tech Stocks Leading Gains

 

Asian markets were mixed on Wednesday, February 19, with China’s A-shares and tech stocks showing strong performance, while Japan faced losses and Hong Kong saw a mixed trend. Robot stocks surged in China, contributing to the broad market strength. Meanwhile, in Japan, Rakuten Group and other stocks faced declines despite gains in other sectors.

 

In China’s mainland market, A-shares closed higher, with the Shanghai Composite Index up 0.81%, closing at 3,351.54 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index gaining 1.46%, finishing at 10,772.65 points. The ChiNext Index rose 2.03%, closing at 2,226.98 points. The market was boosted by a strong performance in the robotics sector, with humanoid robot stocks surging, attracting significant investor interest.

 

The Hang Seng Index ended the day lower, down 0.14%, closing at 21,329.34 points, while the Hang Seng Tech Index rose 0.59%. Among individual stocks, Alibaba-W fell 1.74%, and Tencent Holdings dropped 1.13%, while Xiaomi-W gained 2.17%. SMIC saw a notable rise of 8.37%, reflecting continued confidence in semiconductor stocks.

 

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.27%, closing at 38,919.39 points, while the TOPIX Index dropped 0.30%, finishing at 2,780.84 points. Rakuten Group saw a sharp decline of over 7%, while other notable declines came from SoftBank Group, Toyota Motors, and Keyence, each falling close to 2%. However, Tokyo Electron gained more than 3%, and Nintendo rose nearly 3%, reflecting a mixed market sentiment.

 

In other Asian markets,  South Korea’s KOSPI rose 1.70%, closing at 2,671.52 points, while Malaysia’s FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI fell 0.35%, reaching 1,579.32 points. In India, the S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.01%, closing at 75,972.78 points, while Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index was down 1.25%, closing at 6,787.74 points as of 16:32 SGT.
