Bitcoin ETFs Shrink $53B, But a Whale Bets $360M Against BTC With 40x Leverage

Bitcoin (BTC.CC) has been hit with a record $5.3 billion in ETF outflows since February 10, as hedge funds rush to unwind their positions.

According to Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas, the culprit behind this exodus is primarily basis trading — a strategy where hedge funds buy spot Bitcoin while shorting futures to profit from the price gap. From October to January, that gap (or "basis") widened enough to offer annualized returns over 10%, but as the basis tightened in recent weeks, many funds have decided to pack up and leave.

But this isn't only about hedge fund strategies. Broader market jitters — from Trump's tariff talk to fears of retaliatory trade measures — are spooking investors away from riskier assets. Bitcoin is down 11% year-to-date, while gold, the classic safe haven, has surged nearly 14% in the same period.

Yet, despite all that pressure, Bitcoin isn't going down without a fight. Last Friday, March futures jumped 5.2% to $84,440, and spot BTC rose 4.9% to $84,220. The narrowing gap between futures and spot prices may suggest some stabilization — at least for now.

Also worth noting: $109.2 million net inflows into Bitcoin spot markets on Friday. This hints that retail investors or other buyers might be stepping in to "buy the dip" — potentially setting up a rebound.

But just as things seemed to calm down, a whale made a $365 million short bet on Bitcoin at $84,040 over the weekend, using 40x leverage. Starting with just $8 million in margin, this trade could get liquidated with a mere 2.5% price move against them. The whale is aiming for two profit targets — $69,414 and $58,664 — but if Bitcoin crosses $85,000, the position is toast.

Interestingly, this trader isn't a newbie. Reports say they've already made $16.39 million in a month on Hyperliquid, the decentralized perp platform where this short was placed. Still, no stop-loss and massive leverage? That's a bold and risky move.

As of now, Bitcoin is trading at $83,351, down about 0.99% from yesterday.

The Bitcoin market feels like it's on a knife's edge right now.

On one hand, massive ETF outflows and macro uncertainty (think tariffs and global slowdown fears) are dragging prices down. On the other, narrowing futures-spot spreads and fresh inflows suggest there are still plenty of buyers seeing value here.

As for that whale's giant short? It's a make-or-break bet. If Bitcoin breaks $85,000, the forced liquidation could trigger a short squeeze, sending prices higher. But if prices drop to those aggressive targets, we could see a sharp, cascading sell-off.

Personally, I'm cautiously optimistic in the short term. BTC has already absorbed a lot of negativity, and the recent inflows show some resilience. But let's be real — with that huge leveraged short in play, the $85,000 level is absolutely critical to watch. #bitcoin #btc $BTC
