On Wednesday, investors closely monitored the latest developments in the Middle East while preparing for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate policy decision, with US stock index futures slightly higher. Most major European indices declined.

US stocks performed poorly, impacted by escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

US President Trump threatened on Tuesday, saying, “Our patience is wearing thin,” and demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei stated on Wednesday that Iran “will never surrender” and warned that if the US intervenes in the conflict, it “will undoubtedly face irreparable losses.”

Vital Knowledge founder Adam Crisafulli noted that the stock market has been particularly vulnerable recently.

Crisafulli said: “Even before the worsening situation in the Middle East, the market was already facing numerous risks, with valuations at very high levels, leaving little room for maneuver.” He pointed out that issues like tariffs, fiscal uncertainty, and the debt ceiling remain unresolved, and the market has not fully priced in all these uncertainties.

The Federal Reserve will announce its latest interest rate decision at 2:00 PM ET. The market widely expects the Fed to keep rates unchanged, but investors will closely watch Fed Chair Powell’s post-meeting remarks.

Investors will also focus on the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) “dot plot” to gain insight into policymakers’ expectations for future interest rate paths.

Note that Thursday (June 19) is the US “Juneteenth” holiday, and US stock and bond markets will be closed for the day.
