After a week of turbulence driven by the Iran-Israel conflict, global financial markets are set for another rocky ride this week.

According to reports, President Trump posted on social media that U.S. forces struck three Iranian nuclear facilities. While the strikes’ impact remains unclear, they mark the U.S.’s direct military engagement with Iran.

Ray Takeyh, a senior Middle East fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump’s decision to launch airstrikes on Iran signals an unpredictable new phase for regional security. “This is a new stage, and it could be a problematic one,” he noted.

Mian McIntyre, head of multi-asset solutions at Federated Hermes, commented before the latest developments: “If the U.S. enters the fray or the Iran-Israel conflict escalates, it’ll give the S&P 500 and markets more reasons to react negatively. De-escalation would be a positive for stocks and risk markets. Right now, markets are in wait-and-see mode.”

The S&P 500 has been hovering around 6,000 for nearly two weeks, about 3% below its all-time high of 6,147.

Beyond the Middle East conflict, this week brings routine economic data and events that could add volatility.

First, Fed Chair Jerome Powell will testify before the House on Tuesday (June 23) and the Senate on Wednesday (June 24). With several Fed officials recently hinting at possible rate cuts in upcoming meetings, markets will watch for any shift in Powell’s “no rush to cut rates” stance.

The PCE inflation data, a key Fed focus, drops on Friday.

Additionally, PMI data from the U.S., Eurozone, UK, Japan, Australia, and India will offer insights into global economic trends and business confidence.

On the earnings front, it’s a quiet week, but notable names like Micron Technology and FedEx will report results.

Thematically, traders will eye the NATO summit in The Hague, which could spark interest in defense stocks. The Fed’s annual bank stress test results, due after markets close on Friday (June 26), are always a big deal for Wall Street giants.
