Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Suspended from Office

On July 1, local time, Thailand’s Constitutional Court decided to accept an impeachment petition against Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and suspend her from her duties as Prime Minister.

 

On June 18, 2025, a recorded phone conversation between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation sparked controversy in Thailand.

 

On June 19, local time, the Political Ethics Committee of Thailand’s Senate announced it would submit a petition to the court and the National Anti-Corruption Commission, seeking to remove Prime Minister Paetongtarn from office. The reason cited was her alleged mishandling of the Thai-Cambodian border dispute, particularly the content of her conversation with Hun Sen.

 

On June 19, 2025, Paetongtarn held a press conference to apologize to the Thai public, stating that the incident should not have occurred but emphasizing that it was part of negotiation tactics.

 

On June 20, local time, the Speaker of Thailand’s Senate submitted a request to impeach the Prime Minister. On the same day, Thailand’s Royal Gazette website published an announcement stating that eight cabinet members from the Pheu Thai Party had officially resigned.

 

On June 21, officials from Thailand’s ruling party stated that the Prime Minister would not resign.

 

On June 25, Paetongtarn attended an ASEAN event but declined to comment on the matter.

 

On June 28, thousands of protesters gathered in the capital, Bangkok, demanding Paetongtarn’s resignation.

 

On July 1, Thailand’s Constitutional Court decided to accept the impeachment petition against Prime Minister Paetongtarn, submitted by 36 parliamentarians. During the case’s proceedings, Paetongtarn will be suspended from her duties.
