On Thursday Eastern Time, boosted by strong employment data, all three major indices rose, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both hitting new record closing highs.
At close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.77% to 44,828.53 points; the S&P 500 rose 0.83% to 6,279.35 points; and the Nasdaq increased 1.02% to 20,601.10 points.
The S&P 500 marked its seventh new record closing high of the year, while the Nasdaq achieved its fourth.
Due to the U.S. Independence Day holiday, U.S. stocks closed three hours early on Thursday and will be closed all day Friday.
All three indices posted gains this week, with the S&P 500 up 1.7%, the Nasdaq up 1.6%, and the Dow up 2.3%.
The U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday that June nonfarm payrolls increased by 147,000, with the unemployment rate at 4.1%, both exceeding market expectations of 110,000 new jobs and a 4.3% unemployment rate.
Although the stronger-than-expected jobs data dampened expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut, it also eased concerns about economic slowdown, boosting investor confidence.
The June nonfarm data also drove U.S. Treasury yields higher, significantly cooling market expectations for a Fed rate cut. The CME FedWatch Tool indicates traders now see a 95% chance the Fed will hold rates steady at this month’s meeting.
Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, said, “The biggest takeaway from the jobs report is that a July Fed rate cut is highly unlikely, and even this year’s cut is in question.”
NVIDIA rose 1.3% on Thursday to a record high, briefly surging over 2% intraday with a market cap topping $3.92 trillion. At close, its valuation settled at $3.89 trillion, just shy of Apple’s $3.915 trillion record set at the end of 2024. $NVDA $AAPL
