On Monday, escalating trade tensions drove U.S. stock index futures lower, while major European indices generally rose.

Last week, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit multiple new historical closing highs. However, global financial markets face a test this week as the tariff negotiation deadline expires.

In April, U.S. President Trump announced "reciprocal" tariffs on most trade partners, followed by a 90-day grace period that ends this Wednesday, July 9.

Trump posted on social media Sunday, stating that the U.S. government will release tariff letters or agreements with trade partners starting at 12 PM local time on July 7. He previously indicated plans to impose tariffs as high as 70% on goods from certain countries starting August 1.

Adding to the tension, Trump threatened an additional 10% tariff on BRICS nations.

Analysts note that U.S. stocks reached new highs last week partly due to market confidence that the Trump administration would not enforce the harshest tariffs announced in April. The White House recently suggested that the July trade deadline is “not a critical juncture.”

“Ultimately, trade negotiations typically take years to conclude—U.S. free trade agreements have averaged three years historically,” said Rajeev Sibal, a senior global economist at Morgan Stanley. “While the current talks may be narrower than a full free trade agreement, historical experience remains relevant.”

Tesla shares dropped over 7% in pre-market trading, following CEO Elon Musk’s weekend announcement of forming the “America Party,” signaling a further deterioration in his relationship with Trump.

Trump responded, saying Musk “can have some fun with it,” but called the move “absurd.”
