Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) reported a net income of $213 million, or $0.39 per diluted share, for Q2 2025. This marks a 42.0% decrease compared to the net income of $367 million in Q2 2024. Revenue for the quarter was $7.2 billion, a 1.5% decrease from $7.35 billion in the prior year period. Analysts had estimated revenue of $7.29 billion and an EPS of $0.51, indicating the company missed both revenue and EPS expectations for the quarter.

Key Initiatives and Performance Drivers

The company made significant progress on its transformational plan during Q2 2025, notably implementing bag fees and a basic economy product. Bag fee revenue exceeded expectations and contributed positively to financial results. The new basic economy product structure is laying the foundation for future product differentiation, with incremental fare product buy-up already occurring. The company also completed retrofits of over 220 aircraft for extra legroom seating, with assigned and premium seating sales set to begin next week for flights starting January 2026. These initiatives have already realized approximately one-third of the $1.8 billion 2025 initiative EBIT target in the first half of 2025.

Management Outlook and Strategic Direction

Management indicated that recent industry demand shows signs of improvement following depressed Q2 2025 levels, and combined with moderated industry capacity and company-specific initiatives, creates a constructive backdrop for the second half of the year. The company provided updated full-year 2025 guidance for EBIT in the range of $600 million to $800 million. The Board of Directors authorized a new $2.0 billion share repurchase program, expected to be completed over a period of up to two years, underscoring confidence in the transformational plan. The company also announced its intention to commence new service at Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas beginning early next year.

Regarding fuel costs, the company terminated its remaining fuel hedging contracts in Q2 2025, effectively closing its fuel hedging portfolio. This transaction yielded approximately $40 million in cash proceeds, which will reduce future premium costs. The remaining net premium costs of approximately $209 million will be recognized as an increase to Fuel and oil expense in future periods. The company continues to target liquidity of approximately $4.5 billion and leverage in the range of 1.0x to 2.5x adjusted debt to adjusted EBITDAR, reflecting its commitment to a strong and efficient investment-grade balance sheet.
