Performance Drivers

The record first-half profit was primarily driven by strong net interest income, a record net fee income, and lower costs and provisions. Net fee income surged by 3% (9% in constant euros) to €6,684 million, reflecting increased activity and customer growth. Operating expenses decreased by 0.4%, leading to an improved efficiency ratio of 41.5%, the best level in over 15 years. Credit quality also improved, with the cost of risk falling by seven basis points to 1.14%, supported by the diversified balance sheet and historically low unemployment levels in key markets.

Customer funds, including deposits and mutual funds, grew by 6% in constant euros in the first half of 2025. Loans saw a 1% increase in constant euros, reaching €1 trillion, driven by growth in Consumer, Wealth, and Payments segments. The bank's ONE Transformation program has significantly contributed to operational leverage, resulting in cumulative savings of nearly €550 million since December 2022 due to the replacement of legacy technology with shared global platforms like Gravity.

Strategic Initiatives and Outlook

Banco Santander is on track to meet all its 2025 targets, including projected revenue of approximately €62 billion, mid-to-high single-digit net fee income growth in constant euros, and a cost base reduction in euros. The CET1 capital ratio strengthened to 13%, achieving the 2025 target ahead of schedule. The bank announced a new share buyback program of approximately €1.7 billion, representing about 25% of the first-half profit, reinforcing its commitment to shareholder remuneration. The company plans to allocate at least €10 billion to shareholder remuneration from 2025 and 2026 earnings and excess capital.

Strategic initiatives include the sale of 49% of Santander Poland, which crystallized value at 2.2x tangible book value, and the acquisition of TSB in the UK, expected to generate a return on invested capital above 20% and accelerate profitability in the UK to 16% RoTE by 2028. The ongoing roll-out of global platforms and digital channels continues to scale rapidly, with Openbank securing over $5 billion in US deposits and Zinia financing Apple products in Germany. Management remains confident in the bank's diversified footprint and strategic execution amidst geopolitical uncertainties, expecting to outperform peers in value creation.
