Rio Tinto Group delivered resilient financial results for the six months ended June 30, 2025, amidst a challenging market. The company reported consolidated sales revenue of $26,873 million, which remained relatively flat year-over-year. Net earnings attributable to owners of Rio Tinto, however, saw a decrease of 22%, falling to $4,528 million from $5,808 million in the prior year.

Operational Performance and Strategic Focus

The financial results were significantly influenced by an improving operational performance and a diversified portfolio. The company highlighted a 6% copper equivalent production uplift year-over-year, driven by strong contributions from its Aluminium and Copper businesses. Record bauxite production and the successful ramp-up of the Oyu Tolgoi underground mine were key drivers. Despite a 13% lower iron ore price and the impact of four cyclones in Q1, the Pilbara operations showed a strong recovery.

Segmental Highlights

The Aluminium segment recorded a 50% increase in underlying EBITDA to $2.4 billion, primarily due to higher volumes, prices, and improved market premiums. Copper also saw a substantial uplift of 69% in underlying EBITDA to $3.1 billion, benefiting from the ramp-up at Oyu Tolgoi and better-than-expected performance at Escondida. Conversely, the Iron Ore segment's underlying EBITDA was 24% lower, largely due to reduced realized prices and lower shipments following the Q1 cyclones. The Minerals segment's underlying EBITDA decreased by 58%, affected by lower pricing across most commodities and the absence of insurance proceeds received in H1 2024.

Capital Allocation and Future Outlook

Rio Tinto's robust cash flow generation enabled a 50% interim payout, maintaining its practice of returning capital to shareholders. The company made disciplined investments in profitable growth, with capital expenditure increasing by 18% to $4,734 million. Significant progress was made on key projects, including the acceleration of Simandou's first shipment to around November 2025 and the on-time and on-budget opening of Western Range iron ore. The acquisition of Arcadium Lithium was completed ahead of schedule in March, enriching Rio Tinto's lithium pipeline through new agreements in Chile. The company remains well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand for its products and is on track to deliver strong mid-term production growth.
