ADDX GO Market Morning Wrap - 6th Aug

Stock Market
On Tuesday, the three major U.S. stock indices closed lower.
By the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.14% to 44,111.74 points, the S&P 500 Index dropped 0.49% to 6,299.19 points, and the Nasdaq Composite Index declined 0.65% to 20,916.55 points.

Most hot tech stocks fell, with Microsoft, Meta, and Broadcom down over 1%, Nvidia nearly 1%, while Intel rose over 3% and Amazon gained nearly 1%.
Precious and industrial metal raw materials led the gains, with Gold Fields up over 6%, Kinross Gold over 5%, Pan American Silver and Century Aluminum over 3%.
Semiconductors and stablecoin concepts weakened, with KLA Corp down over 8%, Coinbase and Circle over 6%, Lam Research over 3%, and ASML over 1%.
Early in the session, data from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) showed the U.S. July Services PMI at 50.1, below the expected 51.5 and the previous month’s 50.8, indicating near-stagnation in services growth.
Sub-indices saw the employment indicator drop from 47.2 to 46.4, near its lowest level since the pandemic, while the index measuring prices paid for materials and services climbed to 69.9, the highest since October 2022.

Analysts suggest this report paints a picture of weak services growth under high tariffs, compounded by cautious consumer sentiment and uncertainty from Trump policies.
Chris Senyek, chief investment strategist at Wolfe Research, expects market volatility to persist through late summer, especially given unclear interest rate direction and sensitivity to upcoming economic data.
Alexandra Brown, an economist at Capital Economics, noted the ISM services survey highlights challenges the Fed will face in coming months, with a rising price index at a new cyclical high but weakening activity and employment indicators.
Additionally, U.S. stocks were hit by new tariff news. Pre-market, Trump stating he would impose “small tariffs” on imported drugs, with rates to rise to 250% later. He also plans to announce tariffs on semiconductors and chips “next week or so” without specifics.
Trump said, “In a year, at most a year and a half, the rate will rise to 150%, then to 250%, because we want drugs made in our country.” He did not disclose the initial drug tariff rate.
