ADDX GO Market Morning Wrap - 16th Aug

Stock Market
Amid a mix of encouraging and worrying economic data, the U.S. stock market endured a day of turbulent indecision.

At close, the S&P 500 fell 0.29% to 6,449.8 points; the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.4% to 21,622.98 points; buoyed by UnitedHealth’s performance, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.08% to 44,946.12 points.
Large-cap tech stocks were mixed, with Intel rising nearly 3%, Netflix, Google, Amazon, and Meta posting modest gains; Tesla fell over 1%, while Microsoft, Apple, and Nvidia saw slight declines.
UnitedHealth Group surged nearly 12%, with the latest 13F report revealing that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway built a position in the company’s stock during Q2.
Earlier, U.S. July retail sales data showed a 0.5% month-over-month increase, with a 0.3% rise excluding autos, roughly in line with expectations; however, the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 58.6, marking its first decline since April.
One-year inflation expectations rose to 4.9%, and long-term expectations climbed to 3.9%, indicating that tariff pressures are driving up corporate costs and dampening consumer confidence.
Over the week, the U.S. stock market performed reasonably well. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose 0.94% and 0.81% respectively, both hitting new all-time highs.
The Dow gained 1.74% this week, coming just shy of reclaiming the 45,000-point mark.
Next week, the market will see a flurry of U.S. retailer earnings reports and Fed Chair Powell’s Jackson Hole speech, which will provide further clues on consumer behavior and monetary policy.
Another reason for Friday’s cautious market mood is the ongoing U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, with global fund managers anxiously awaiting the outcome’s potential impact on all major asset classes.
