Tonight’s Highlights | US Stock Futures Edge Higher, Investors Focus on Inflation Data
On Monday, US stock index futures saw a slight uptick, while major European indices generally rose. Investors are eagerly awaiting two key inflation reports this week to gain deeper insights into the health of the US economy.

These reports are particularly critical following last Friday’s weaker-than-expected employment data. The August Producer Price Index (PPI) will be released on Wednesday, followed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Thursday.
The disappointing August jobs report has fueled market expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders estimate a roughly two-thirds probability that the federal funds rate will fall between 3.5% and 3.75% by year-end, implying 25 basis point cuts at each of the three remaining rate meetings this year.
Traders also see a 7% chance that the Fed could cumulatively cut rates by 1 percentage point before year-end, which would require at least one significant 50 basis point reduction.
“While we can’t be certain, it’s possible the labor market’s weakness is more severe than the Fed knows or is willing to admit,” said Tom Hulick, CEO of Strategy Asset Managers.
Hulick added, “There’s significant room for short-term US Treasury yields, especially the two-year note, to decline, particularly if data revisions continue to trend weak.”
Brent crude futures rose 2%, with analysts noting that concerns over further Western sanctions on Russian oil due to Russia’s airstrikes on Ukraine have overshadowed OPEC+’s planned production increase next month, with the actual increase falling short of expectations.
