Rare earth stocks suddenly caught fire this week. USA Rare Earth $USAR , a relatively small player in the industry, jumped more than 20% after its CEO confirmed the company has been in regular talks with the White House. That one line was enough to send speculation flying—could Washington actually take a stake in this company?

Why Rare Earths Matter So Much

Before diving into the stock story, let’s step back. Rare earths are a group of minerals that are absolutely essential for modern technology—think fighter jets, electric cars, wind turbines, smartphones, and even missiles. Without these materials, high-tech supply chains grind to a halt.

The catch? China controls most of the world’s rare earth mining and processing. That dominance makes the US highly dependent on Chinese supply, which is a big national security risk. For years, US leaders have wanted to change that, but the progress has been slow and messy.

Trump’s Push for Independence

President Donald Trump has made it clear he wants the US to cut its reliance on China. He views rare earths as a strategic resource—just like oil was in the 20th century. For him, building up domestic production isn’t just about business, it’s about national security.

That’s why the White House has already backed companies like MP Materials and Lithium Americas. Both are seen as critical players in creating a more self-sufficient supply chain. If USA Rare Earth joins that circle, it could reshape the entire industry.

What the CEO Actually Said

Barbara Humpton, the CEO of USA Rare Earth, told CNBC that her company is “in close communication with the administration.” She didn’t confirm a deal, but she emphasized that this industry won’t be a winner-takes-all game. In her words, it will take many companies working together to build a strong US rare earth market.

That message matters. It suggests Washington isn’t just betting on one champion—it may support a whole group of firms to break China’s monopoly.

The Projects on the Ground

USA Rare Earth isn’t just talk. It’s developing a rare earth mining project in Sierra Blanca, Texas, and building a magnet manufacturing plant in Oklahoma. Magnets are a big deal—they’re what make rare earths useful in things like EV motors and military equipment. If the US can control that part of the chain, it reduces one of its biggest vulnerabilities.

What Investors Are Watching

The stock market clearly loves the story. USA Rare Earth shares surged 23% on Thursday and another 13% in Friday’s premarket session, nearly doubling this year. That’s a massive move for a company that was barely on most investors’ radar a few months ago.

But here’s the catch: this is still a high-risk bet. The company isn’t a giant like MP Materials, and it will take years to fully develop its projects. What’s driving the stock right now is political momentum and speculation that Washington might throw serious support behind it.

My Take

I see this as part of a bigger trend. The US is in the middle of redesigning its supply chains—whether it’s semiconductors, batteries, or rare earths, the goal is the same: reduce dependence on China. That shift creates huge opportunities for companies like USA Rare Earth, but it also means volatility. These stocks will swing wildly with every headline, because politics matter as much as profits.

For long-term investors, the key question is whether these companies can actually deliver production, not just promises. If USA Rare Earth can get its Texas and Oklahoma projects running, it could become a cornerstone of America’s rare earth strategy. Until then, the story will trade more on White House rumors than hard numbers.
