Key Transmission Project Approved! Micron’s $100 Billion Investment Makes Progress, Stock Surges Over 5%
On Thursday Eastern Time, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the New York State Public Service Commission has approved a new underground transmission line connecting the existing Clay substation to Micron Technology’s planned large-scale semiconductor factory in Onondaga County.

For Micron Technology, this approval of critical infrastructure is a major milestone in its $100 billion investment project in New York. Driven by this news, Micron’s stock closed up 5.52% on Thursday.

The press release stated that this two-mile, 345-kilovolt line is a key piece of infrastructure for Micron’s planned $100 billion investment in Central New York, marking the largest private investment in the state’s history.
The project is expected to create over 50,000 jobs over the next two decades, including 9,000 direct jobs at Micron.
Hochul said: “This project will transform the face of Central New York—we are moving forward with the speed and diligence this process deserves.”
The approval of the transmission line follows a 2022 agreement between Micron and New York State, when Micron selected the region as the site for its advanced manufacturing facility. The megafactory is slated to begin production by 2030, with capacity expected to account for one-quarter of U.S.-made semiconductors.
The commission also approved the first phase of the project’s environmental and construction plans, including the eastern expansion of the Clay substation and the installation of equipment connecting the substation to Micron’s factory.
