Big U.S. tech firms have been pouring billions into the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, driving their market caps to new heights. Sea Group, Southeast Asia’s e-commerce giant often dubbed the “Tencent of Southeast Asia,” isn’t sitting still and is gearing up to dive headfirst into the AI wave.

In a Monday memo to employees, Sea Group’s founder and CEO, Forrest Li, said that by leveraging AI to fuel business expansion, the company could realistically hit a $1 trillion market cap—a jaw-dropping figure that’s ten times its current $98.1 billion valuation.

In the memo, Li compared the rapid rise of AI to the PC and smartphone revolutions, which brought products and services once exclusive to the wealthy to everyday consumers. But the head of this “Southeast Asian Tencent” admitted that capturing AI’s value won’t be easy.

“To seize this opportunity, we need to make the right calls, execute efficiently, stay disciplined, and compete relentlessly,” Li wrote in the memo marking Sea’s eighth anniversary as a U.S.-listed company. “It’s this kind of tech transformation that makes it possible for Sea to become a $1 trillion company.”

Clearly, the founder, who loves penning memos to Sea’s 80,000+ employees, is singing a different tune from a year ago when he warned about the challenges of pivoting to AI. Since then, Sea has doubled down, weaving AI into daily operations like customer service and gaming.

Li also touched on the company’s recent stock price uptrend but voiced concerns about potential sharp drops due to external changes—reminiscent of Sea’s stock crash in late 2021. He noted that the company’s financial health is stronger than at any point in the past decade, no longer reliant on external capital to grow.

“While the external environment is always unpredictable, I’m more confident in our future than ever,” he wrote, adding that all three of Sea’s business segments—e-commerce, gaming, and digital financial services—are now fully profitable.

“Over eight years as a public company, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of how capital markets work and how to navigate them. Even if storms arise, our ability to control our decisions and destiny has grown significantly.”

However, Li didn’t share specific plans for Sea’s AI push or how it will tackle intensifying competition.

The Southeast Asian gaming and online retail giant is currently battling deep-pocketed global rivals, including ByteDance’s TikTok Shop and Alibaba’s Lazada. Newcomers like Shein and PDD’s Temu are also eyeing Southeast Asia, a region with 675 million people and a growing wave of online shoppers.

In far-off Brazil, Sea is carving out a new growth frontier, expanding its Shopee e-commerce empire.

The company is also betting on new areas like digital finance and logistics to solidify its market dominance and prove its growth potential to investors.
