Tonight’s Highlights | Trade Optimism Boosts Markets, U.S. Stock Futures Rise Collectively**
On Monday, U.S. stock index futures rose collectively, buoyed by positive trade news, with Nasdaq 100 futures climbing over 1%. Most major European indices also saw gains.
Last week, U.S. stocks performed strongly, with all three major indices hitting record highs. The Dow closed above 47,000 points for the first time, and the S&P 500 touched 6,800 points for the first time. All three indices recorded their second consecutive week of gains.
The chip sector, highly sensitive to trade tensions, led pre-market gains, with Nvidia (NVDA), Broadcom (AVGO), and AMD each up about 2%.
Investors expect the Federal Reserve to cut rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday Eastern Time, especially after last week’s inflation data came in slightly below expectations.
This week, major tech earnings are in focus: Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOGL), and Meta (META) will report after market close on Wednesday, followed by Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) on Thursday.
A risk factor in the trade landscape is U.S.-Canada friction. On Saturday, U.S. President Trump announced an additional 10% tariff on Canadian imports, citing Canada’s failure to promptly remove a TV ad featuring former President Reagan criticizing tariff policies.
