Stock Market

Overnight and this morning, driven by tension from massive commodity volatility, the three major U.S. indices closed lower collectively.

At the close: S&P 500 Index −0.35% to 6,905.74 points, Nasdaq Composite Index −0.5% to 23,474.35 points, Dow Jones Industrial Average −0.51% to 48,461.93 points.

This week is also a relatively light economic calendar, with investors awaiting the Fed’s December meeting minutes on Tuesday.

As the day’s global market focus, silver — the “ringleader” of this metals rally — experienced huge swings: COMEX silver futures hit a new high above $82/oz before plunging to $71.6; gold, platinum, palladium and others also fell sharply. Mining stocks declined collectively: First Majestic Silver −4.13%, Newmont −5.64%, lithium giant Albemarle −3.62%.

Miller Tabak + Co. Chief Market Strategist Matt Maley said: “Precious metals have been severely overbought short-term, so Monday’s sharp drops are not the end of the world. If these assets weaken further over the next one to two weeks, it could create another good buying opportunity.”

Meanwhile, with limited progress in Ukraine ceasefire talks, oil prices edged higher intraday.

Over 15% drop from intraday high – Epic silver plunge! Gold also big drop, platinum/palladium over 10%

Monday night markets saw silver volatility: after last Friday’s epic +10% surge, Monday night delivered an epic −10%+ plunge.

Silver intraday drop over 10% — largest intraday swing since 2021. Technical indicators show the rally may have “run too far, too fast.” Gold plunged $200 intraday (−4.5%), breaking below $4,329/oz from last week’s record high — markets view gold as “overbought” too.

Silver’s reversal came hours after topping $84/oz. The turn also followed CME raising margin requirements for multiple metals contracts — the exchange notified traders Friday of increases as part of “routine volatility review,” effective Monday.

CME said in a statement it would raise margins on certain COMEX silver futures from Monday — analysts say this helps curb speculation.

Why Bitcoin’s Holiday Lull Could Be Setting Up A Bigger Move

Crypto markets are closing out 2025 in a subdued state, with prices moving sideways and onchain activity cooling across major networks.

But beneath the holiday lull, technical indicators and positioning data suggest markets may be approaching a decisive inflection point heading into early 2026.

Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) have traded largely flat in recent sessions as seasonal inactivity weighs on volumes.

According to onchain data, activity has slowed across most chains, reflecting consolidation rather than a broad exit from crypto markets. Analysts say this backdrop is masking a potentially pivotal setup for the first quarter of 2026.
