U.S. major indices all closed higher Monday Eastern Time, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average hitting a new record high led by strong gains in financials. Energy shares also surged after the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that took control of President Maduro.
Investors are betting the Trump administration’s hardline stance on Venezuela’s leadership could open the door for U.S. energy companies to tap the country with the world’s largest oil reserves. The administration is reportedly planning meetings this week with executives from major U.S. oil firms to discuss ramping up Venezuelan production.
On Monday, Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife Flores made their first appearance in New York’s Southern District federal court, pleading not guilty to U.S. charges.
Evercore ISI policy analyst Matthew Aks wrote in a note: “This is undoubtedly a major geopolitical event, but it’s unlikely to become the primary driver of significant market volatility in the short term. Our gut feel is that Trump isn’t keen on the kind of large-scale, boots-on-the-ground regime change wars he’s long criticized, like Iraq or Afghanistan.”
The S&P 500 Energy Sector Index rose 2.7%, with heavyweights ExxonMobil and Chevron posting big gains. Defense stocks climbed too amid the military action, with Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics up about 3%, pushing the S&P 500 Aerospace & Defense Index to a record high.
Rob Haworth, senior investment strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, said: “Energy stocks are clearly benefiting from market expectations. Investors believe Trump wants to push U.S. energy firms into Venezuela, ramp up investment, and ultimately lift corporate earnings.”
He added: “With no sign of permanent ground troops or prolonged military involvement, the broader market can temporarily set aside fears of a long-term conflict.”
Interactive Brokers chief market analyst Steve Sosnick noted: “Sentiment has clearly shifted toward financials lately. As investors gradually rotate away from tech, financials are becoming a key allocation area.”
Economic data showed U.S. December manufacturing activity contracted more than expected, marking the 10th straight month of weakness.
Attention now turns to Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, which could significantly influence the Fed’s 2026 monetary policy path.

Saxo Bank: Venezuela Situation Unlikely to Trigger Oil Price Repricing
Saxo Bank analyst Charu Chanana wrote that short-term, Venezuela isn’t the kind of shock that automatically tightens global supply and forces major oil repricing. Even with a constructive political shift, output won’t recover fast—the industry needs capital, equipment, manpower, and infrastructure, a multi-year rebuild.
Venezuela’s oil sector has long suffered underinvestment and constraints. For sustainable repricing, geopolitics would need real supply chain disruption or wider regional fallout.
