Tonight's Highlights | US Stock Futures Mixed, Healthcare Stocks Plunge Premarket on Medicare Concerns
On Tuesday premarket, US stock index futures were divergent: Dow futures declined, while Nasdaq 100 futures rose. Major European indices generally advanced.
Several major health insurers saw sharp declines in premarket trading. Humana, UnitedHealth Group, and CVS all fell more than 10%. UnitedHealth Group's drop intensified after it issued weak 2026 revenue guidance.
On the news front, the Trump administration aims to keep Medicare rates essentially flat next year.
UnitedHealth's decline weighed on Dow futures, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were supported by strength in global chip stocks.
UPS shares surged premarket after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results. General Motors rose despite posting a quarterly loss.
Overall, this earnings season has been strong. According to FactSet data, about three-quarters of S&P 500 companies have beaten market expectations so far.
Adam Parker, founder and CEO of Trivariate Research, commented:
“The market is laser-focused on earnings season right now. Over the next two weeks, 200 companies will report — and so far, things look good. The real question is whether we can sustain this momentum into April guidance. I think yes.”
