GoAI Market Wrap - 11th Feb
Stock Market
Wall Street saw a mixed performance on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closing in the red while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged higher to notch another record close.
The Dow hit its third consecutive all-time high during the session, maintaining momentum after first crossing the historic 50,000-point threshold last Friday.
At the close:Dow Jones Industrial Average: Up 0.10% to 50,188.14. S&P 500: Down 0.33% to 6,941.81. Nasdaq Composite: Down 0.59% to 23,102.47.
Retailers were under clear pressure on Tuesday, with Costco sliding over 2% and Walmart dropping more than 1%. Latest retail sales data showed U.S. consumer spending was flat month-over-month in December, missing expectations of a 0.4% increase and marking a sharp cooldown from November's 0.6% gain.
"A key factor weighing on the low-to-middle income consumer is their perception of the job market, and we know their confidence is becoming more uncertain," said Anthony Saglimbene, Chief Market Strategist at Ameriprise Financial. "If January job growth fails to meet expectations, it could spark a pullback in the 'broad-based rally' theme."
Financials also took a hit. LPL Financial plummeted 8.3%, Charles Schwab fell 7.4%, and Morgan Stanley dropped over 2%. Sentiment in the sector soured after fintech platform Altruist launched an AI-driven tax planning tool, stoking fears that AI disruption is reaching traditional wealth management.
"The market appears to be rotating into sectors that may be less vulnerable to the 'AI trade' fallout," Saglimbene noted, pointing to recent gains in materials and utilities.
