Stock Market

U.S. equities took a heavy hit on Thursday as anxiety over AI-driven disruption reached a fever pitch. All three major indices slid more than 1%, with the Nasdaq pacing the decline with a 2% drop.

By the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had shed 1.34% to 49,451.98, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite slid 1.57% and 2.03% to end at 6,832.76 and 22,597.15, respectively.

The market narrative has shifted. Investors are increasingly wary of "AI disruption" hitting sectors like software, publishing, and financial services. The fear is that new AI tools will either replicate existing business models or aggressively erode margins.

Financial heavyweights like Morgan Stanley faced pressure on concerns that AI could upend wealth management, while logistics giant C.H. Robinson plummeted 14% as traders bet AI will optimize freight operations and squeeze traditional revenue streams.

Even real estate was caught in the crosshairs, with CBRE and SL Green Realty sliding on fears that AI-related job losses could further dampen office demand.

"AI was the sole engine driving these valuations to extreme—though perhaps not absurd—levels. Now, it’s becoming the primary headwind," said Jay Woods, Chief Market Strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.

Ed Yardeni, President of Yardeni Research, added: "Investors are jittery about AI’s impact, both positive and negative. Right now, they are laser-focused on the disruptive side."

Defensive plays offered a rare sanctuary, with Walmart and Coca-Cola rising 3.8% and 0.5% respectively. Consumer Staples and Utilities were the top-performing sectors, with Staples hitting a fresh record close.

Meanwhile, Apple tumbled 5%, erasing its year-to-date gains following reports that the upgraded Siri project has hit further snags, potentially delaying key AI features until May or later.
