Investors face an unusually dangerous combination: a war that won’t quite end, tariffs that keep escalating, and an inflation report landing this morning that could make everything worse. The Dow ripped 1,325 points higher on Tuesday’s ceasefire news, but those gains are already fading because the Strait of Hormuz still isn’t open and oil is back above $100.

Global Market Indices Update - 10 April 2026
U.S. equities advanced for a seventh straight session on Thursday (April 9), with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq each extending their winning streaks.

At the close, the S&P 500 rose 0.62% to 6,824.66 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.83% to 22,822.42, both notching a seventh consecutive gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.58% to 48,185.80, turning positive for the year.

Chip stocks led the advance. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.1%, with 28 of its 30 components closing higher. Lam Research gained 4.98%, Marvell Technology +4.79%, Intel +4.70%, Rambus +4.09%, and Nova +3.90%. In storage, SanDisk surged 9.05% and Seagate Technology rose 0.90%, both closing at all-time highs. Micron Technology added 3.63%, while Western Digital edged down 0.27%.

Intraday, reports that Trump had asked Israel to reduce strikes on Lebanon to keep U.S.–Iran talks on track lifted the S&P 500 off its lows and pulled crude prices sharply back from their intraday highs.

Bradford Smith, portfolio manager at Janus Henderson Investors, said: “Beyond the durability of the ceasefire, the volume of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and whether a permanent deal can ultimately be reached — there is not much else that matters for this market.”

Rick Wedell, CIO at RFG Advisory, noted that the ceasefire gives investors reason to believe the situation will resolve over time, but cautioned that the longer the strait remains closed, the harder reopening becomes and the longer the energy supply shock persists.

Software stocks remained under pressure: the iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF (IGV) fell 3.9% to its lowest since November 2023, weighed by renewed concerns after Anthropic released a new suite of AI agent tools. By contrast, AI hardware outperformed — the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index both hit fresh intraday highs.
Key Events
BlackRock’s Jewell: Earnings Expectations for U.S. Stocks Are Too Optimistic
Helen Jewell, BlackRock’s CIO of Fundamental Equities International, warned that consensus earnings forecasts — still running at 15–18% growth — need to come down given the inflationary impact of the Middle East conflict. She said consumer sector profit expectations are particularly hard to justify given elevated interest rates and energy-driven inflation.
Amazon Plans $25 Billion Data Center Investment in Mississippi
Amazon announced plans to invest $25 billion in data centers in Mississippi, creating 2,000 jobs, plus an additional $300 million to upgrade the state’s power grid. The project includes $12 billion for facilities in Madison and Hinds counties.
Amazon Explores Selling Its AI Chips to Other Companies
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company is considering selling its custom AI chips — the Trainium and Inferentia series — to external customers. The move would position Amazon as a direct competitor to Nvidia in the AI accelerator market and could open a significant new revenue stream for AWS.
Intel and Google Expand CPU and IPU Collaboration
Intel announced that Google Cloud will continue deploying Intel Xeon processors, while the two companies are expanding their joint development of custom ASIC-based Infrastructure Processing Units (IPUs), deepening their AI infrastructure partnership.

Sector Intelligence
SEMICONDUCTORS & TECHNOLOGY
SMH (1D)$422.92▲ 5.76%
XLK (1D)$207.15▲ 3.10%
Key Drivers: Semiconductors (SMH +5.76%) hit a new all-time high as SanDisk surged 9.05%, Micron gained 3.63%, and the Philadelphia SOX index reached record territory. The broader tech sector (XLK +3.10%) was lifted by AI hardware demand, with chip stocks outperforming software peers.
Outlook: AI infrastructure investment continues to drive semiconductor outperformance; the SMH–IGV divergence (hardware new highs vs. software −3.9%) signals a rotation into AI hardware plays.
SHIPPING & LOGISTICS
Freightos Baltic Index (FBX)$2,309
Baltic Dry Index2,161
Market Dynamics: BDI climbed to 2,161 (+1.03%) for a fifth consecutive session gain, reaching its highest since March 5, driven by capesize (+0.5% to 3,235) and supramax (+2.5% to 1,293) strength. The Drewry WCI rose 1% to $2,309/FEU, with transpacific West Coast rates near $2,400/FEU and Asia–Europe at $2,900/FEU. Singapore bunker stocks remain tight at roughly one month’s supply.
Outlook: The two-week ceasefire may ease the Hormuz risk premium, but elevated fuel costs and limited bunker availability are likely to keep container rates firm near-term.
Institutional Views
GoAICAUTIOUS
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq have now posted seven consecutive daily gains, with the Nasdaq hitting 22,822 and the SMH semiconductor ETF reaching a new all-time high. However, GoAI notes a key divergence: AI hardware (SMH) at record highs while software (IGV) remains down 3.9%, suggesting the rally is narrow. The ceasefire is a positive catalyst, but with oil prices rebounding +3.66% on Apr 9 and software weakness persisting, GoAI maintains a CAUTIOUS stance — the breadth of this rally does not yet justify broad bullishness.
Goldman SachsNEUTRAL
Goldman Sachs upgrades its near-term U.S. equities view to Neutral following the S&P 500’s seventh consecutive daily gain and the Iran ceasefire announcement. The bank notes that “fast money” selling has abated, with net equity buying of approximately $20 billion expected over the next month. It maintains its recession probability at 25% and bear-case S&P 500 target at 5,400 should Hormuz disruptions resume, while recommending a rotation toward quality growth and trimming energy overweights on any further de-escalation.
Morgan StanleyBULLISH
Morgan Stanley’s Mike Wilson reiterates that the equity selloff was geopolitically driven, not fundamental, and the seven-day rally validates that view. With 2026 EPS growth of 12% intact and the S&P 500 at 6,824, the bank maintains its year-end target of 7,400. Wilson highlights AI hardware names — including SanDisk, Seagate, and Micron — as key beneficiaries of the ongoing AI infrastructure buildout, noting the SMH’s new all-time high as a positive structural signal.
