Score: 38 — Mild Fear
Sentiment is creeping higher as the S&P 500 breaks above 7,000 for the first time in history. Fear is easing, but conviction remains fragile — the rally is still driven more by headline optimism than fundamental clarity. Credit markets remain orderly and the Fed’s rate posture provides a floor. The key question now: can earnings season confirm what the price action is already pricing in?

Global Market Indices Update - 16 April 2026
On Wednesday, both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite closed at all-time highs. The S&P 500 crossed 7,000 for the first time ever on a closing basis, while the Nasdaq ended above 24,000 after eleven consecutive days of gains — fueled by optimism that a U.S.–Iran framework deal is within reach.

At the close, the S&P 500 rose 0.80% to 7,022.95; the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.59% to 24,016.02; and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 0.15% to 48,463.72. Among the mega-caps: Nvidia +1.2%, Alphabet +1.26%, Apple +2.94%, Microsoft +4.61%, Amazon −0.21%, TSMC −1.26%, Broadcom +4.19%, Meta +1.37%, Tesla +7.62%, Berkshire Hathaway −0.77%.

Trillion-dollar tech giants are once again leading the market to new highs. Nvidia logged its 11th consecutive daily gain; Tesla surged on Musk’s announcement of a key breakthrough in the AI5 chip; Broadcom extended its own 7-day win streak after Meta’s custom-chip deal. Most striking was Microsoft, which rallied 11% in just three trading sessions, adding nearly $300 billion in market cap — only the third time since the dot-com bust that the stock has risen more than 2% on three straight days.

On the diplomatic front, U.S. and Iranian negotiators are reported to have made progress in the latest round of talks and are moving toward a framework agreement to end the conflict. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Jeddah on Wednesday for a Saudi visit, with Qatar and Turkey to follow; Pakistan’s Army Chief Munir also led a delegation to Tehran to continue mediating between Washington and Tehran.

In just two weeks, markets have pivoted from inflation-panic selling to fear-of-missing-out buying — a reversal that is historically rare. The Nasdaq moved from oversold on March 30 to overbought on Wednesday in just 11 sessions, the fastest such reversal since records began in the 1980s. Since March 30, the Nasdaq has gained more than 15%.

Craig Johnson, Chief Market Technician at Piper Sandler, said: “While we think some healthy skepticism toward this headline-driven optimism is prudent, breadth and trend indicators are steadily improving from the March lows — at least until the next headline changes everything again.”
